The European Union Idea

At the heart of everything wonderful is a beautiful and positive idea. 73 years ago, a Frenchman shared his vision of a united Europe and reversed the development of the old continent forever.

In his speech on May 9, 1950, Robert Schuman shared the idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would make war between European nations unthinkable. The French Foreign Minister's proposal is considered the beginning of what we now call the European Union.

Peace

In the middle of the 20th century, peace was established in post-war Europe, which was already tired of constant conflicts. However, this calm situation was fragile because a new division took place. This time it was the east versus the west.

The red lines literally divided one of the largest countries on the continent, which became a playground for two radically different philosophies for the organization of society.

Unity

At this point, Schuman understood that peace in Europe was only possible through unity between the different countries. And this goal could be achieved most successfully by establishing deep political and economic ties based on equal rights and obligations.

The rule of law gradually gained the upper hand in relations between the countries, and thanks to it democracy, equality and the freedoms of citizens were established. In this way Europe embarked on a path of unprecedented rise and integration.

The countries became closer and closer to each other and constantly expanded their cooperation. Step by step, what the members of the bloc had in common became much more than the things that separated them. And all the European institutions became a symbol of this very unity and still take care to promote the values of the EU.

EU in the 21st Century

Today, the European Union is the greatest symbol of peace and unity in the world. European integration is constantly deepening and attracting more and more countries to join this unique bloc.

In 2023, Schuman's idea of a united Europe is more relevant than ever. It is the best example of the futility of war. And the clearest proof that only together the EU countries can cope with any challenge.
